![]() Postscript: Quicklink is not a panacea for your slow website If you have any feedback, I’d love to hear in the comments below or the Quicklink module issue queue. Be sure that Drupal’s caching is enabled (it is by default), and bonus points for using a content delivery network. Quicklink will prefetch many more pages than your server is currently serving. That being said, test your site extensively before deploying this library to production. Note the “Initiator” column (seen below in Chrome Developer Tools) shows you that Quicklink initiated the HTTP request. When you scroll and additional links enter the viewport, you will see them being prefetched. Open up the network tab in your developer tool of choice, and you can see the HTML documents being retrieved while the browser is idle. Watching links get prefetchedĬhecking which linked pages get prefetched is pretty straightforward. Fortunately, we can use your browser’s built-in developer tools, plus the module’s debug mode to figure out exactly what’s going on. This can make figuring out why a link isn’t being prefetched pretty tricky. There’s a lot of logic involved when deciding whether or not to prefetch a link. Troubleshooting prefetches (and lack of prefetches) with debug mode An option to disable the loading of Quicklink on specified content types. If you add domains here, be sure to also include the origin domain. ![]() By default, Quicklink will only prefetch links from the origin domain. This can be used to limit the element in which Quicklink searches for links. This is useful if there are specific paths or links that shouldn’t be prefetched. A “URL patterns to ignore” field to enter custom patterns that Quicklink will ignore if found within the link’s URL.Once installed, you’ll have access to a configuration form at /admin/config/development/performance/quicklink.īesides the default options, the module provides several options: If the module detects this file, it will be used instead of the CDN version. If you install the module with Composer ( see the readme file for instructions), a local copy of the file will automatically be downloaded and installed at /libraries/quicklink/dist/. This is necessary because Quicklink’s license is incompatible with GPLv2 and can’t be hosted on. Once installed, Quicklink will do its magic without any additional configuration!īy default, the module will load the Quicklink library from a CDN. Gives an option to load the Intersection Observer polyfill, which is necessary for Quicklink to work with Safari or Microsoft Edge browsers. We don’t want the browser to waste bandwidth downloading PDFs, MP3s, etc By default, it ignores links that end with a file extension.By default, the Quicklink module ignores admin links, AJAX-enabled links, and the logout link.Option to disable loading the library if sessions are present - this is useful for Drupal Commerce sites.Only loading the library for anonymous users (by default).Integration with the Drupal behaviors system.Integrating these capabilities into Drupal, the Quicklink module enables a number of Drupal-specific tweaks including: If the browser is idle, it will also prefetch these links. It also attempts to detect your connection type, and if it detects a slow connection, it’ll skip prefetching.Īfter links are prefetched, Quicklink uses the Intersection Observer API to detect when hyperlinks enter into the browser’s viewport. Out of the box, it detects links within the viewport and downloads them when the browser is idle. Quicklink is a small (less than 1kb compressed) JavaScript library that “attempts to make navigations to subsequent pages load faster.” Building upon those capabilities, GoogleChromeLabs created a JavaScript library called Quicklink that integrates these features with prefetch and lazy-loading functionality. ![]() This recently changed with the advent of the link prefetching and Intersection Observer API capabilities in modern browsers. ![]() Until recently, there really wasn’t any good way to do the “prefetching” part with traditional server-rendered systems similar to Drupal. This makes subsequent page loads nearly instantaneous. At its core, it’s a strategy to push down and render content within your browser and then “prefetch” links on the page. PRPL stands for Push, Render, Pre-cache and Lazy-load. Recently, Google started evangelizing the PRPL pattern to combat this. According to the HTTP Archive, the median time to first contentful paint is 5.8 seconds - this means that the average person waits almost 6 seconds just to view an average website on their phone.

![]() He's the guy who screwed up Haffner's chances of sort of moving up in the CBI. And while Ray Haffner really does have a genuine fondness for Teresa Lisbon, Patrick Jane to him is just a nightmare. Mahoney: It's important to remember that Ray Haffner has not had a particularly pleasant experience with Patrick Jane. What's his motivation in warning Jane and Lisbon of bad things to come? And there are rumors that Jane has really pissed those people off, and that's a dangerous thing to have done.įall TV Popularity Contest: Vote for your favorite new shows! A lot of people have this sense that there is a secret society out there. What Haffner's talking about is there's chatter in the world of police. The team takes this as, is this a Red John threat? Is this a Visualize threat? But I think you're exactly right, and I think the audience hopefully is going to pick that up. We're giving the audience information that our team might not have yet. ![]() He's a guy who has connections all through law enforcement. Ray Haffner is a guy who used to work in CBI. Mahoney: Yes, I think that's exactly right. Can this be seen as an allusion to the "Tiger Tiger" conspiracy that was teased in last week's episode? It's this feeling of, are we being watched? Is this case being thrown in front of us so that somebody can be observing and manipulating us? Which is a disconcerting thing for Jane to be confronting, and I think adds to this growing sense of tension and anxiety about what's happening in the world around us.Īt one point, Haffner tells Jane there's a "comeuppance" heading his way and makes reference to the fact that he has friends in CBI. In the past, certainly when he went up to Napa, it was really an act of Jane saying, "I want to take a case that's going to get me up there so that I can start looking at McAllister.' But in this case, you're investigating a case that's a mysterious case to begin with, and then suddenly there's Ray Haffner in the room. I think that's what Jane is sort of confronted with. Is Haffner working with CBI a case of "keep your friends close and your enemies closer"? We don't have Malcolm McDowell in this episode, but there's something about Jason, who I think does a really nice version of saying, "There's something coming, and it's making me nervous." ![]() So you have this effect of, either he's Red John, or is he like John the Baptist, the one who sort of comes before Red John? Is this Red John or is this just this tool of Red John that is showing up to sort of throw Jane off? Who's the puppet master behind it? Is Bret Stiles doing all this to sort of screw with Jane's head even more than he has in the past? And Robert Picardo, who plays Jason Cooper. Mahoney: Because is a member of Visualize, by his very presence he also sort of brings the specter, the shadow, of Bret Stiles ( Malcolm McDowell) along with him. This episode teases a connection between Red John and Visualize. Plus: What are his thoughts on those conspiracy theories about Grace Van Pelt's ( Amanda Righetti) possible involvement? Read our interview to find out: turned to Eoghan Mahoney, who wrote "The Red Tattoo," to weigh in on tonight's episode and the latest developments in the Red John case. Before she dies, she gives Jane a key clue about Red John: he has a tattoo of three dots on his left shoulder. ![]() Red John (clearly someone the investigator recognizes) goes to her apartment and kills her moments before Jane and Lisbon arrive on the scene. But when Visualize's second-in-command, Jason Cooper ( Robert Picardo), knows nothing about the bug, Jane realizes that it's actually Red John who hired the PI - who's either working with Red John or is his next victim. However, Jane figures it out and surreptitiously re-plants the bug on her. Turns out the victim, a gymnastics champion, was a killer himself - and died as he was trying to cover up murdering a former student with whom he had been having an affair.īy the end of the episode, we learn that Visualize hired a private investigator to become friendly with Cho ( Tim Kang) and plant a bug on his desk in CBI. This time, it's the smug Ray Haffner ( Reed Diamond), who joins forces with CBI after a prominent member of the Visualize cult (of which Haffner is a member) is murdered. Jane and Lisbon ( Robin Tunney) once again find themselves working a case with one of Jane's seven five Red John suspects. Red John struck again on Sunday's episode of The Mentalist - and Patrick Jane ( Simon Baker) got another major clue as to his identity. ![]() Some people argue that the new CoC is a hell for moderators and a heaven for trolls. Definitely, that is not how the community is. Some people think that SE presents its community as a place full of bigots and fascists that should be expelled and purified by force. And most users don't think that SE sincerely care anything about that. Most people think that the way that SE fired Monica was definitely unethical and unfair at best. ![]() No honest person likes to be forced to tell a lie. ![]() Of course that free speech is not an excuse to be rude or to say horrible things, but it is definitely subverted if people are forced to voice something even if they really don't believe nor agree on it. However, the new CoC seems to compel people to tell things even if they don't believe in it, so there is no free speech anymore. Even because there can't be true self-determination if there is no free speech. People tend to value free speech more than self-determination. Nobody would like to get suspended or banned in a witch-hunt just for asking for some clarification, for committing some silly mistake or even for not saying something. There are a lot of gray areas and uncertainties. Many people think that the new CoC is a minefield. This would mean that the meta simply would lose most of its purpose of even existing. Many people think that SE are simply ignoring any input or feedback from people on meta. Many people see SE as an entity that keeps telling lies to the users.
